How to measure a shirt

On our website you can choose the size of your shirt in 3 different ways:

  1. You can take measurements from an existing shirt (we explain how on this same page)
  2. Can Take your body measurements , with the help of a friend.
  3. You can choose one of our standard sizes

If you want to make a new shirt, one of the easiest solutions to take your measurements is to start with an existing shirt.

By choosing a shirt that fits you well and with the cut you like, you can be sure that the result will not disappoint you.

In the photos on this page you can see how the main measurements are taken.

It is important to lay the shirt on a flat, hard surface (for example, a table) removing wrinkles and folds before taking each measurement.

Neck

Unbutton the shirt and lay it back side down on a table or other flat surface (check the label, or if it doesn't have a label, check the inside of the shirt).

The collar is measured from the center of the buttonhole to the center of the button.

The number in centimeters (e.g. 42) or inches (e.g. 16) is the shirt size – the one you should order when buying a shirt in a store rather than having it custom-made.

Shoulders

This measurement is taken at the back of the shirt, between the points where the sleeves are sewn at the yoke. It is the point where the 3 pieces (shirt body, sleeve and yoke) meet.

Chest

Now button the shirt and measure under the sleeves, where the armhole seam is (the part that corresponds to the armpit and where the sleeves meet the body).

Waist

With the shirt buttoned, measure between the fourth and fifth button. This is usually where the shirt is narrowest.

Hip

With the shirt buttoned, measure from side to side where the shirt ends, starting and ending at the side seams.

Long

It is measured parallel to the buttons, between the point where the collar joins the body and the point where the shirt ends (the “hem”).

Wide arm

To measure arm width (or “biceps”) the tape measure should be perpendicular to the top of the sleeve, and reach the point where it connects to the body of the shirt (the armpit, or armhole).

Long arm

Arm length (or sleeve length) is measured on the upper side, from the end where the sleeve is sewn to the shoulder to where it ends (cuff included).

Doll

The entire length is measured, from side to side.
